Free will is the room to learn to love, to grow to love, to choose love. Having this freedom, the freedom to get lost, lost from God, is the greatest gift.
To be set free to drift in the winding gyres of our own subtle taint, that anger, that pride, whatever a person is sheltering. That is the gift the Lord gave is, which required Him to suffer all possible suffering. That suffering is not really a personal descent into hell so much as the eternal and constant bearing with us by the logos so he may correct the universe to sheild us somewhat from the full extent of our karma by doling it out periodically through time, and gently whispering, singing and soothing. What the suffering of the Lord is really, is His attention to free beings who must cause their own trouble until the point that they can see. See. Much as the mother bird pushes the baby off, so the Lord sends us into the torrent of chaos and doubt, so we may become like Horus, Heru, a Hero. That torrent of chaos and doubt is a continuum of incarnation where what is held in the heart draws one back into that sort of life. The grudge, the fetish, the greed, the vampiric hunger for something of a singular nature. The “one thing” of pop culture, of addiction, the “it”, this is the very lubricant of a souls slide into the circular mill of incarnation, fetish, failure, return. This is the world of Broken, and they who try to “fix” here are doomed to forever try again to fix the game of failure, of not enough, of slipping satisfaction, object a as Lacan calls it.
To fall victim to Object a, the spur of reincaration, of repetition, to fall into “love”, into passion, is a special gift, it is to know “the option”, that is, the option to divine harmony, which is the state of freewill. The gift is the opportunity to chose harmony, to chose to unravel the kinks and tangles in the soul surface. (we are just knots or twists in the being-surface of God) To unravel back into God, this is the gift, this return voyage from “freedom” (which is really a bondage) to freedom from bondage, which is the return to the Fields of the Lord. This return is a finding ones way back to the dance, for the kingdom of heaven is musical in its rhythm and organization. It is dancing together with other in learning and teacher and giving and building and receiving the bounties left by other “Friends” of the Way, the narrow way that all true friends take. This narrow way rejects the hungering after singular things, and forsakes the lust of the flesh to dance in freedom and participation with others, taking part in the continuum of friends, the River of Saints, the Wise Spirit Brothers who have so much to give.
